Sedona, or "Zoolander," as he is affectionately known.
Sedona is a red dun of unknown breeding (we think Quarter Horse/Thoroughbred maybe). He's very sweet, and a fast, smooth ride. However, he's also probably the stupidest horse on the ranch. Most people agree that if Sedona were a person, he would be the stereotype people use for male models: all the beauty and brawn, but absolutely no brain at all. We call him "Zoolander" after the Derek Zoolander character because he's really kind of an idiot. He has a really hard time with open gates, failing to find them and go out of them even when there's food on the other side, for instance. And you have to tie him on one specific tie in the corral or else he has a serious shit losing moment and will pull back and then proceed to run into things. He's quite a bit special.
(This doesn't mean I think all male models are stupid. Take a joke)
Sedona also really likes to run. Like, a lot. He will do laps around the pasture, running at full speed and whinnying. Sometimes the other horses will join in for a few laps, and then after they drop out when nothing interesting is happening, he continues to run and whinny by himself. I originally did this pose for a different piece, but after working on that for a few days I decided this was also the perfect pose for Sedona (and it looks like him, with the high head and skinny neck).
Not happy with the scan on this one at all. It ate all the color and it has taken me an hour in photoshop CS trying to get some of it back. And now it looks overly shimmery. I am however really happy with the shading in this one and please with the actual piece, just not the scan. It's been so long since I've done real traditional art. I always wonder after finishing why I don't do more of it, and then I scan it and know exactly why I go back to digital.
